Arnold Schönberg

The Composer

1874 – Arnold Schönberg wird am 13. September als Sohn des Schuhwarenfabrikanten Samuel und der Pauline Schönberg (geb. Nachod) in Wien geboren.

1882–85 – Violinunterricht. Komponiert Märsche, Polkas.

1889 – Tod des Vaters an einer Lungeninfluenza.

1890 – Verläßt am 22. Januar die Schule und beginnt als Lehrling in der Privatbank Werner & Co.

1894 – Als Mitglied des Dilettantenorchesters Polyhymnia lernt er seinen künstlerischen Mentor und späteren Schwager Alexander Zemlinsky kennen.

1895 – Kündigung der Anstellung bei Werner & Co. Dirigate bei Gesangsvereinen und Chormeisterstelle in Stockerau.

1896 – Auf Anregung Richard Heubergers entstehen die

About the Music

Arnold Schönberg was – is – one of the giants in music history. He was well aware of the unique significance of his oeuvre, otherwise he might not have been able to persevere in creating compositions which for many years met with no success, which were indeed received with animosity. He was a prophet initially admired and supported (even financially) by a relatively small group of disciples. Schönberg and his school may have been seen by contemporaries as a kind of religious sect headed by a guru who expected - and received - total dedication from his followers.
