(…) These variations on Vivat Bacchus in the Mozartiana series are not overly adventurous harmonically- the theme hardly strays from the tonic and dominant - but he shows great ingenuity in discovering a variety of shapes and decoration. Hummel the teacher is much in evidence here, each piece a miniature study in some technical aspect of playing that would be ideal for a reasonably advanced student to exercise neat finger work. Choosing the theme and cherry picking one or two of the simpler variations might also be a good choice for a student recital or even for separate studies.
