Sir Richard Rodney Bennett
All the King's Men | An Opera for young People - Work Introduction
The libretto of Richard Rodney Bennett’s moving 45-minute children’s opera All the King’s Men was written by Beverley Cross, based on the popular nursery rhyme Humpty Dumpty. The rhyme tells of a cannon that was mounted on the top of a church tower in Gloucester in 1648, during the English Civil War, and that “had a great fall” when the tower was hit by the besieging Roundheads. Bennett’s opera delights listeners with its enchanting melodies, exhilarating orchestration and subtle rendering of the characters.
