Hamlet | a drama | for trombone and orchestra - Work Introduction

Borisova-Ollas and Faingersh tell Shakespeare’s most famous tale with a trombone and an orchestra. Soloist Faingersh ‘acts’ out the play on stage and interacts with both the musicians and the audience, translating the drama of the work into a musical dialogue with his co-performers.

Elias Faingersh is one of the most sought-after trombonists in the world: not just because of his superb command of the instrument, but also because of his unique style of stage appearance, which always includes visual and performance elements derived from the music. His free, virtuosic way of handling the instrument and his eccentric stage presence distinguish him from all other trombonists.

“The solo trombone part made the strongest impression. With the help of live electronics (loopmashines) Faingersh played and recorded layer after layer to create a polyphonic structure. In the ‘Ghost’ scene he created a fascinating atmosphere with winding melodies, ancient church-bells and the sound of waves culminating in a powerful explosion.” (Sydsvenskan Dagbladet)
