Work Introduction

Although they were never planned as a cycle, Gustav Mahler’s Wunderhorn songs are occasionally performed in this way, frequently with two singers, regularly with a female and male voice singing alternately. Unlike the later song cycles, there has never been a version for chamber ensemble/ orchestra until now. Following his successful arrangements of symphonies 1, 4 and now also 9, Mahler specialist Klaus Simon has dedicated himself to enabling the performance of the Wunderhorn songs by smaller ensembles.
