Work introduction
This piece came about in collaboration with Maurice Béjart and his Ballet du XXe Siècle, occasioned by the 600th anniversary of the death of Francesco Petrarca (Petrarch) (1304-1374). Béjart was inspired by his poem I Trionfi; the name is a line from the first Trionfo. Sectioned according to the six parts of the poem, Berio’s score is written for various configurations (orchestra, solo piano, electronic music, etc.). A tape of his music is used for performances – just as at the premiere in the Boboli Gardens in Florence, when a large number of loudspeakers projected it from all directions.
