Biography

1896 – Born on the 26th April in Lemberg (Galicia), now Lviv (Ukraine)

1907 – The family moves to Vienna

1907–1910 – Boarding school in Mürzzuschlag (A) and St. Gallen (CH)

from 1915 – Officer on the Russian and Italian fronts

1919–1920 – Composition studies with Franz Schreker in Vienna

1921 – Debut as composer at the music festival in Winterthur (CH)

1922Nachtmusik für Orchester – first extant work

1923 – Première of Drei Lieder zu Gedichten von Lao Tse at the Salzburg Festival

1925 – Influenced by Arnold Schönberg’s twelve-tone music writes 5 Balladen nach Gedichten von Else Lasker-Schüler

1926 – Ballet Tragödietta

1929 – Première of the opera Maschinist Hopkins on the 13th April in Duisburg (D)

1929 – Death of his first wife

1930–1933 – Production of short films (all lost)

1937 – Marriage to Anna Bechert

1937–1939 – Emigration to Prague, contact to Alois Hába

1939 – Emigration to Geneva and then Rio de Janeiro, Acquaintance of Heitor Villa-Lobos

1940–1975 – New York

1944 – Première of the opera The Gate at the Metropolitan Opera New York

1950 – Première of symphonic poem The Wonderful One-Hoss-Shay by the Philadelphia Orchestra under Eugen Ormandy

from 1959 – Occupation with electro-acoustic music
