Arvo Pärt: composer of the month


Arvo Pärt (c) Universal Edition, Eric MarinitschJanuary 2014 features two festivals that are dedicated to Arvo Pärt and one festival that focuses on the composer’s music.

The Focus! 2014 festival begins on 24 January at the Juilliard School of Music in New York. Joel Sachs, the founder and director of the festival, dedicated this year’s programme to Alfred Schnittke, who was a close friend of Pärt. Nine works by Pärt will be performed, including the world première of the new and revised version of La Sindone on 24 January.

The Bruckner Orchestra Linz, led by Dennis Russell Davies, and Musica Sacra present a Pärt festival that runs from 25 to 31 January. On the programme: a choir concert, a piano recital (Dennis Russel Davies with Maki Namekawa), three concerts with the Bruckner Orchestra and performances of the Symphony No. 4 Los Angeles and Silhouette in Linz and Vienna. Altogether 19 works by Pärt will be played.

Swan Song (c) Universal Edition14 works by the composer will be performed during the Mozart Week Salzburg. Among them are the world première of Swan Song for orchestra (Vienna Philharmonic, cond. Marc Minkowski) on 29 January and the Austrian première of Adam’s Lament (Camerata Salzburg, Latvian Radio Choir, cond. Tõnu Kaljuste) on 1 February.

The composer will be present at several of the concerts in Linz, Salzburg and Vienna.
