Während seines Studiums an der Hochschule für Musik in Köln schrieb Stockhausen einige freie, kompositorische Stilübungen, die selbstverständlich zur Ausbildung gehörten. Er komponierte Fugen, Choralvorspiele, Liedbearbeitungen, Chorsätze und Sonaten in den verschiedensten Stilen der Tradition. Knapp vor dem Staatsexamen komponierte er als eine solche "freie Arbeit" die "3 Lieder" für Altstimme und Kammerorchester nach eigenen Texten bzw. nach Charles Baudelaire. Spieldauer ca. 17 Minuten
