Work introduction

Turkish composer Rey spent many influential years of his childhood and youth in Paris and Geneva before returning to his homeland in 1923. At that time, his musical thinking was shaped by Debussy and Ravel; yet when he began to compose, he found that Turkish folk music was just as significant to him. Thus the result was a singular mix of French Impressionism and traditional Turkish melodies, as characteristically evinced by this piano concerto, first performed with Rey as soloist and conducted by Dimitri Mitropoulos.
