Work introduction

Edison Wassiljewitsch Denisow was one of the unofficial Soviet avant-garde. He composed seriously and successfully in the style of the Second Viennese School, clearly with different results from those in the west. In 1970, Denisov wrote Peinture for large orchestra, a work which fascinatingly reflects all the elements of the conflict to which the composer was subjected as he was caught between western avant-garde and official Russian musical tradition.
