Work introduction

Badings’ international reputation in the late 1930s and early 1940s was already very considerable; the young Dutch composer had already drawn attention abroad with his orchestral works when no less august an ensemble than the Vienna Philharmonic invited him to write a piece for the orchestra’s centennial in 1942.

The orchestration of Symphonischer Prolog (called Festal at the world premiere) is virtuosic in its mastery; the piece has a clearly defined and incisive thematic scheme, the rhythms are forceful, polyphonic clashes burst forth from the texture.
