Work introduction
The title of Wilson’s fourth piano trio is taken from a poem dedicated to the American painter Robert Motherwell (1915-1991). From 1948 until his death, Motherwell was occupied with a series of paintings bearing the title “Elegy for the Spanish Republic” and inspired by a poem by Federico Garcia Lorca and his murder at the hands of the Falangists. The composer describes the paintings as “large, powerful and dramatic;” he wanted to compose music which was likewise powerful and dramatic.
