Biography
Juan de Dios Magdaleno was born in Colima, Mexico in 1984. Since the age of 10 Juan has been active in music, initially through his Mexican folk heritage. In Mexico, he studied violin with Tatiana Zatina and Alessandro Orsso and composition with Anatoly Zatin and Luis Jaime Cortez, in parallel he realized architectural and mathematics studies. In 2009 he completed his Bachelors Degree in Composition at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam under the tuition of Fabio Nieder and Richard Ayres. Juan de Dios currently pursues a Master’s degree in Composition at the University of Music and Arts in Graz under the guidance of Gerd Kühr.
Throughout his musical studies Juan has taken part in composition workshops and lectures with Helmut Lachenmann, Brian Ferneyhough, Tristan Murail, James Dillon, Jonathan Harvey, Salvatore Sciarrino, Marco Stroppa, Michael Jarrell, Oscar Bianchi, Ivan Fedele, Julio Estrada, George Benjamin, among others.
He has been honoured by receiving some awards and fellowships for his creative work such as the first prize at the International Composers’ Competition “Lutoslawski Award 2008” in Poland, the second prize at the “Mauricio Kagel Composition Competition 2010” held in Vienna, the Premi Joan Guinjoan 2013, the Musikförderungspreis der Stadt Graz 2013, the “Jóvenes Creadores” Fellowship by the CONACULTA/FONCA, the Franz Schubert und Musik der Moderne International Composition Competition 2014, and the Ö1 Talentebörse composition prize 2014.
His Music has been played in Mexico, Canada, the Netherlands, Poland, England, USA, Italy, Spain, France and Austria by ensembles and musicians such as: Ensemble Intercontemporain, Arditti Quartet, Asko|Schoenberg Ensemble, Nieuw Ensemble, Namascae Lemanic Modern Ensemble, Orchestre National de Lorraine, Nouvel Ensemble Modern, Ossia Ensemble, Orquesta de Camara de Bellas Artes, Jos Zwaanenburg, Juan Miguel Amador and Ernesto Molinari.
