Work introduction

Before he emigrated to the West, Slovak composer Ladislav Kupkovic was a leading figure in the new music movement in his homeland. Yet his music fundamentally changed in the late 1960s and early 1970s; for the past 40 years he has been writing tonal compositions.

Souvenir, for violin and string orchestra, is a captivating piece – in quotation marks – sweet, even cute salon music, fascinatingly humorous, angular and virtuosic, performed with relish by violinists of the stature of Gidon Kremer.
