Work introduction

Berio composed this short piece for the 70th birthday of Goffredo Petrassi, the important Italian composer and pedagogue. The allusion to Renaissance polyphonic music is in Petrassi’s spirit, just like the dense canonic structure, which is rather more suggestive of the 20th century: thus the subtitle Canone per moto contrario e a rovescio (con un breve intermezzo) [“Canon in contrary motion and inversion (with a short intermezzo”)].
