Work introduction

Composed for the 60th birthday of his friend and comrade-in-arms Pierre Boulez, Ricorrenze was inspired by Terre Chaleureuse, a work by French artist Jean Dubuffet. Berio’s music is playful and virtuosic; based on the reiteration of pitches at various tempi and in various octaves, it initially has the effect of a pulsation which gradually seems to determine the music after it has ceased, to turn into rapid repetitions. Again and again, they are interrupted by rests and short, virtuosic runs, as the music becomes fitful. This is brilliant music for five winds.
