1896 – Born on the 26th April in Lemberg (Galicia), now Lviv (Ukraine)
1907 – The family moves to Vienna
1907–1910 – Boarding school in Mürzzuschlag (A) and St. Gallen (CH)
from 1915 – Officer on the Russian and Italian fronts
1919–1920 – Composition studies with Franz Schreker in Vienna
1921 – Debut as composer at the music festival in Winterthur (CH)
1922 – Nachtmusik für Orchester – first extant work
1923 – Première of Drei Lieder zu Gedichten von Lao Tse at the Salzburg Festival
1925 – Influenced by Arnold Schönberg’s twelve-tone music writes 5 Balladen nach Gedichten von Else Lasker-Schüler
