Work introduction

I have long been interested in the idea of music in a permanent state of exposition, and these pieces are the first conscious attempt to exploit the notion. In a sense they are like windows, randomly opening, revealing parts of larger structures with events without context passing across them. The first place begins three times, with a middle section which has two ideas, one enmeshed with the other. The second has a hidden scenario with the viola used as a protagonist, and is dedicated to Andre Hebbelinck, who commissioned the first two pieces for the Antwerp Festival. The third was written first, for the 90th birthday of Alfred Schlee and exploits a strict rhythmic procedure of overlapping pulses and hockets.
