Work introduction

Apart from the 11-bar Adagio section and some short ritardandi (which soon turn into accelerandi), this quartet in one movement is to be played presto possibile. The first bar presents the motivic seed on which the entire piece is based; constantly subjected to variation, it occasionally appears in the mask of a lyrical melody – in the viola, for instance – while the other instruments play rapid, richly accentuated passages. This harried music is of irrepressible power, its expressiveness reminiscent of Alban Berg. As Rihm once wrote, “You have to struggle with a string quartet, trenchantly and lovingly;” his String Quartet No. 13 is compelling proof of his struggle.
