Work introduction
The Trio is one of Feldman’s late works; it is unusually long, in one movement and scored conventionally. As opposed to Piano, Violin, Viola, Cello, for example, tension predominates in this music like a drama in which the instruments engage in dialogues. The registers, the sound-colours, the playing techniques and the dynamics are all very broad in scope, as the tempo constantly changes. This is not meditative music; it is full of surprises – listeners never know how it will continue. This work is Feldman’s response to listeners whose lack of concentration irritated him.
