Der Nazarener
Work introduction
This work brings together some descriptive passages from the New Testament book of John with the poem ‘Christ, The Nazarene’ by Constance Naden (1858 – 1889), who was considered (by W.E. Gladstone at least) to be one of the nineteenth century’s foremost female poets.
The work is written either for use in concert performances or for services of worship -despite the secular slant of the poem – and is ideally used as part of a concert programme of sacred works where it would be useful to have a short work which provides exposure for four soloists (S, M-S, T, B) with an accompanying chorus.
The dramatic opening provides an ‘ad lib’ tempo fitting for the skill and size of the chorus. The sections from the book of John are composed upon an ostinato bass line. The middle, instrumental section signifies the passing of time and the finale section, in which the poem is set, is reminiscent of Victorian hymn setting with a more contemporary harmonic approach.
The work was written for Harlow Chorus, Essex, UK and was given its premiere performance on April 15th2023, by the chorus, Natasha Page (soprano), Olivia Gomez (Mezzo Soprano), Rory Carver (Tenor) and James Quilligan (Bass Baritone) accompanied by the British Sinfonietta Orchestra and conducted by Edward-Rhys Harry.
