Arnold Schönberg´s most famous works and books
Transfigured Night
Schönberg wrote the work at the age of 25 and was inspired by his love for Mathilde von Zemlinsky. This beautiful, late-romantic piece is one of Schoenberg's most popular and most frequently performed compositions.
Six Little Piano Pieces
Schönberg wrote the Six Little Piano Pieces op. 19, in 1911 under the immediate impression of the news of Gustav Mahler's death. The longest piece, op. 19/1, has 18 bars, while the shortest, pieces no. 2 and 3, have only nine bars.
Suite op. 25
The Suite op. 15 is Schönberg's first piece composed entirely in the twelve-tone technique; he wrote it between 1921 and 1923.
The Fundamentals of Musical Composition
The work is aimed at aspiring composers and deals with traditional techniques and methods of organisation from before 1900 in order to convey a broad knowledge of music theory.
Harmonielehre
The Harmonielehre first appeared in 1911 and is the theoretical foundation of atonal twelve-tone music.
Preliminary Exercises in Counterpoint
This book is a compendium of many years of teaching practice, in particular the counterpoint lectures that Schoenberg gave at the University of California in the 1930s and 1940s.
