Work introduction
I have felt a strong natural impulse to listen to this music in 5/8, grouping the eighth notes in 3+2 and/or 2+3, which in some passages of the work is very clear, and in other moments ambiguous. This music is like a dialogue with surprises. It begins as a distant ritual (in space and time), a remembrance of dances (des danses), that approaches until the melodies assume the narrative function, as in a story.
The work, in general terms, should be interpreted with much expressiveness and great rhythmic sense. There are enough dynamic indications to give a clear direction of the interpretative intentions, but the performers’ own initiative, influenced by spontaneity in the concert situation, is also certainly welcome, to create a lively interpretation of the work.
There are very clear melodic motifs, evenly distributed between the 2 violins: both parts are of equal instrumental importance. At the same time, listeners are confronted with a plurality of themes that they themselves can perceive, depending on the acoustic perspective. As in an optical illusion - in this case an auditive one! - two melodic lines can mix and merge, from one measure to another, generating a concrete sound object, a melody resulting from the combination of both sound sources: such as between measures 256 and 260.
Besides playing the violin, the 2 musicians use their voices to recreate some sound and/or rhythmic effects. From measure 296 to the end, a playful character takes over the music - and indeed, the performers! - until generating a very discreet ‘theatrical action’, where some gestures and movements are expected from the musicians, until the conclusion of the piece: like those things that appear so real in a dream (el azul), until we finally find 'certainty', a smile and the awakening...!
