Work introduction
I admit I have a fondness a preference, maybe even an appetite or weakness to write music which is lyrical. It is important to me. And the reason for this is because I respect and hold in high esteem the beautiful lyricism in Maurice Ravel’s music.
This piece was written in my early years. My formative years. Once a fellow composer told me that my music was simple. I took that as a compliment but I don’t think this composer meant it as one.
In this day and age the more complex something is the more praised and applauded it is likely to become. And that’s fine with me. In nature the beautiful and I mean the really beautiful things far outshine the ugly things in nature. Both exist side by side harmoniously. Both are the property of nature. I remember nature’s beauty. And it is up to me which one I choose to pay attention too. I choose to pay attention to the beautiful fabric in life.
I think this duet is a successful marriage of two very different instruments. There are two very different timbres at play here. Timbre is very important. How do I make this combination work? For this combination to work I must trust my training and my experience. And, I must trust my power of choice.
All in all this duet is pleasant to listen to.
