Preface
The Missa in honorem Sancti Ioannis Baptistæ, for mixed choir, solo soprano, solo tenor, piano and violin, is the result of a commission from the Association Libanaise des Chevaliers de Malte. It consists of eleven pieces, including the Ordinary of the Mass in Greek and Latin, as well as other texts in French, inspired by the Holy Scriptures, in particular psalms and liturgical hymns of the Catholic tradition, and even old prayers, in honor of Saint John the Baptist.
Musically, the general spirit of this mass is inspired by the joy of the Holy Spirit. The texts are mostly developed syllabically, for a better intelligibility. Each of the soloists, soprano and tenor, have their respective aria, but they also appear in counterpoint to the choir. The role of the piano is particularly important: besides its accompaniment to the choir and soloists, it also paraphrases the meaning of the text in a concertante style.
Commissioned a few weeks after the Beirut port tragic events of August 4, 2020, I dedicated this work to the memory of the victims, in a testimony of Peace, Hope and Joy.
