Work introduction
Lo speziale (“Der Apotheker“[“The Apothecary”]) is an opera buffa (originally called a dramma giocoso) in three acts and five scenes; now and again, it is also performed in a one-act arrangement. Whether Carlo Goldoni actually wrote the libretto is a matter of debate, but experts agree that his was at least the source material.
Opinions are also divided regarding the date of the first performance. The one thing appearing certain is that it was staged for the first time in 1768 in Esterhazy Palace.
Haydn’s wit joins with the originality of dramatic invention.
