When Grand Duke Jean of Luxembourg died on 23 April 2019 at the age of 98, the Luxembourg composer and pianist David Ianni spontaneously composed a piano piece in honour of his statesman. In the 98 measures Ianni processes the Grand Ducal hymn of Wilhelmus in the canon and combines it in the last part with the main theme of Adieu, a long, sweeping melody in F sharp major that expresses kindness and gratitude.
On the occasion of the first anniversary of the death of ‘Grand-Duc’ Jean, David Ianni wanted to produce a music video with Adieu. Unfortunately, the COVID 19 crisis prevented this project. However, in order to commemorate the former head of state of Luxembourg in a special way, David Ianni has decided with Universal Edition to make the sheet music of Adieu freely available until 30 April, 2020.
Interpretations are welcome to be posted with the hashtag #adieujean, which David Ianni collects and wants to publish for his social media channels on Grand Duke Jean's Memorial Day. We wish you much joy with this very special piece of music!
