It was with great sadness that we learned of the death of Paul Badura-Skoda, who had been closely associated with Universal Edition for many decades.
Only a few months ago, on 17 April, he presented the book about his correspondence with Frank Martin at our premises: ‘Frank Martin - Paul Badura-Skoda - Letters’. As always, he also impressed us with his passion for this occasion, always supported by his well-founded expertise. Pointed and remembering many details, he spoke of his friendship with the Swiss composer.
His Schubert expertise was legendary. This was shown in many UE editions, in which he was able to combine musicological meticulousness with the requirements of musical practice in the most persuasive way possible. Thus he, who was supported early on by Wilhelm Furtwängler and Herbert von Karajan, was an important mentor for many young pianists.
We bow our respects and gratitude to the life achievement of the doyen of the local piano scene.
