Reading time: 2 min. Arvo Pärt

Arvo Pärt’s new a cappella composition And I heard a voice … will receive its world première on 18 February at the Capilla del Colegio Fonseca in Salamanca. Paul Hillier conducts the Danish vocal ensemble Ars Nova Copenhagen.

Pärt dedicated the work – which was commissioned by the Centro Nacional de Difusión Musical on the occasion of the 800th anniversary of the founding of the University of Salamanca in 2018 – to the memory of Archbishop Konrad Reinhold Veem.

Other works by Pärt that will be performed at the event are Kleine Litanei, Virgincita and Mother of God and Virgin. Follow-up performances take place in Madrid (19.2), Badajoz (20.2), Copenhagen (23.2), Svendborg (24.2) and Søllerød (25.2).

And I heard a voice … is based on a text from the Book of Revelation (14:13):

And I heard a voice from heaven saying, ‘Write this: Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord from now on.’
‘Blessed indeed,’ says the Spirit, ‘that they may rest from their labors, for their deeds follow them!’

(John, Revelation 14:13)
