The Chinese composer Yikeshan Abudushalamu (born 1985) has just won the Concorso Internazionale di Composizione Luciano Berio in Rome.

The competition, which was announced for the first time, was initiated by the Centro Studi Luciano Berio and the four major Italian orchestras: Orchestra dell'Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia, Orchestra Filarmonica della Scala, Orchestra del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, Orchestra Sinfonica Nazionale della Rai. The international jury, consisting of the chairman Antonio Pappano, Ivan Fedele (Italy), Unsuk Chin (South Korea), Tristan Murail (France) and Augusta Read Thomas (USA), awarded two further prizes: one to the Korean composer Hankyeol Yoon (born 1994) and another to the Chinese composer Bo Li (born 1988).

The prizewinner will receive a commission of 20,000 euros to compose an orchestral work that will be performed six times in 2021 thanks to the partnership with the four major orchestras. The work will also be published by Universal Edition.
