World première of Arvo Pärt

Reading time: 2 min. Arvo Pärt

Kanon Pokajanen, the canon of repentance, is one of the most important choral works by Arvo Pärt. Pärt created the 90-minute a cappella work for Cologne Cathedral, where it was premiered in 1998.

The last (and longest) part of the work, Prayer after the Kanon, is both culmination and return to silence. Twenty years later, this section is to be heard for the first time in a new form. Arvo Pärt has arranged it for choir and string orchestra under the title Prayer.

Tõnu Kaljuste, who conducted the world premiere of the a cappella version at the time, will once again conduct the Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir, this time accompanied by the Tallinn Chamber Orchestra, as part of the Nargen Festival, in St. Paul's Church in Viljandi on September 7.
