Wolfgang Rihm's treatment of the orchestra cannot be reduced to a common denominator, except perhaps that his music should ‘sing at its core’. Sostenuto, a work commissioned by the Concertgebouworkest, which will be followed by a second part in autumn, may seem a little abrupt or prickly at first hearing. But at its core, this music conquers through its humanistic foundation. As is so often, Rihm has drawn a double entendre and he always reaches out his hand for reconciliation.
The world premiere will take place in Amsterdam on 5 March 2020, further performances will follow on 6 and 8 March.
