Description

Obwohl das Cello sich kaum vom Orchester abhebt, ist es doch Soloinstrument im wahrsten Sinne des Wortes. Ihm ist eine breite, extrem ruhige Kantilene zugeteilt, während das Orchester den Gesang des Cellos harmonisch unterstützen darf. Nur an einer Stelle versuchen zwei Trompeten dem Soloinstrument die Melodie abzunehmen - ohne Erfolg. Noch einmal glaubt man an eine Verselbständigung der Trompeten, diesmal unterstützt von einer dritten Trompete und den Fagotten, doch es bleibt nur ein Hauch. Allein dem Xylophon gelingt es, die Repetitionen des Cellos - allerdings nur auf einem Ton - nachzuahmen, knapp bevor das Stück erstirbt.
