INDIVIDUAL OR GROUP LEARNING
All of these pieces for young cellists in their earliest stages of learning can be performed as a solo or in unison with others. Some have an optional 2nd part and may also serve as ensemble material.
MIXED ENSEMBLE OPTION
Whilst written specifically for the instrument and addressing the challenges beginners would encounter, a special section is included of four pieces which are "key friendly" for beginners on most instruments and are therefore ideal pieces for mixed instrumental groups. These same four pieces appear in books for other instruments in the Debut series.
This fabulous new album contains a varied selection of pieces that not only would sound great on a West End stage but are playable by cellists as soon as they can negotiate their way around first position and pick up a few jazzy rhythms. There is a piece or two to match every temperament and mood - "Autumn Andante" or "Doctors Orders" for those seeking a moment of reflection, "Shoes on Parade" or "Motorcycle Rock" so toe-tappingly good that they will prove even more exciting than kicking a football around in the playground. Those who like reading scary stories will love "The Skeleton in the Closet", with its menacing pizzicatos, shivering tremolos and spine-tingling ponticello, and animal lovers will enjoy giving the dogs an airing in "Dance of the Seven Dachshunds". (…) Gold star to Mr Rae!
Music Teacher Magazine 10/2013 (Robert Max)
This book with accompanying CD and piano accompaniments proved very popular with my groups of young beginners. James Rae's stated aim of writing pieces specifically for the challenges the beginning cellist would encounter have certainly been met. The pieces are all key friendly, all in first position and do not include any shifting or extensions. (…) This publication is not designed as a tutor but it is an excellent supplement of performance pieces for cellists in the first couple of years of learning. The varied accompaniment styles on the CD were motivating - a real hit with students.
