Description

Beethoven's 'Sonata quasi una Fantasia' in C sharp minor, Op. 27 No.12 for piano, was composed in 1801, tough an earlier B minor sketch for the beginning of the first movement can be dated 1799 at the latest. No work of Beethoven's seems to be so greatly moved by aspects of intimate biography as this, which he dedicated his pupil and beloved at that time, the young Countess Giuliette Guicciardi. It was not until after Beethoven's death that the work received the universally common name 'Moonlight' Sonata from the poet Ludwig Rellstab.

This urtext edition includes
• Preface, notes on interpretations and critical notes in English and German
• An autograph manuscript of the 'Sonata quasi una Fantasia Op. 27 No. 2, first movement, bar 14 ff.

The sheet music from Wiener Urtext Edition is edited from the sources by Peter Hauschild, and includes notes on interpretation and fingering by Boris Bloch.
