At the request of many customers, Wiener Urtext Edition now publishes the much sought-after two-volume edition of the Etudes by Frédéric Chopin (Etudes Op. 10, Etudes Op. 25, and Trois Nouvelles Etudes), edited by Paul Badura-Skoda, in one volume. The edition therefore meets the demands and needs of teachers who will welcome these works in one, user-friendly volume.
(…) The most absorbing of three recent Wiener Urtexts is Paul Badura-Skoda's work on the complete Chopin Studies (Opp 10,25 and the three Nouvelle Etudes). Keen-eared pianists puzzled by apparent discrepancies in CD performances and thumbing feverishly from one edition to another can, at a price, now relax. The fault is largely Chopin's own, in publishing different versions simultaneously and continuing to tinker thereafter. No single definitive reading can take precedence: Badura-Skoda makes us aware of the alternatives by fitting them where they belong, not in easily overlooked endnotes but on small fragments of ossia stave, alongside the music itself yet still managing to keep page-turns to a minimum. Alternative fingerings abound to allow for different sizes of hand. Strongly recommended. (…) Music Teacher 03/2006 (Michael Round)
