Onyx Brass will perform the world première of David Sawer’s Bronze and Iron on 22 March, on the steps of the Royal Concert Hall, Glasgow.
The piece was commissioned by Onyx Brass and Fourfortytwo as part of the PRS for Music Foundation New Music Biennial and in celebration of the ensemble’s 21st Birthday.
I find bandstands incredibly evocative, full of ghosts and child-like memories, whilst being at the same time perfectly functional and practical platforms for popular, outdoor performance. The idea of composing a piece that would draw the public’s attention to these unique, surviving monuments in free, open and public spaces immediately appealed.
My piece heightens the theatricality of these spaces through the spatial arrangement and movement of the five players, both singly and in groups, approaching, standing and moving in and around the bandstand, aiming to catch the audience by surprise. (David Sawer)
