For Lenny

Reading time: 1 min. Luciano Berio Gustav Mahler

Luciano Berio wrote a short piece in 1988 under the cryptic title LB.AM.LB.M.W.D.IS.LB, which he dedicated to Leonard Bernstein for his 70th birthday. On the occasion of Bernstein's 100th birthday on August 25, the piece gets the new title For Lenny.

New performance material is now available. For Lenny was recorded under Marin Alsop for Naxos.

Quotes about Bernstein, taken from the book Gustav Mahler – The Conductors' Interviews, published by Universal Edition:

In the case of Bernstein, we have an example of one of the greatest interpreters who ever lived. (Riccardo Chailly)

He was great, one of the greatest, and he had such a wonderful personality. And, of course he conducted Mahler with such passion and emotion, and we were very influenced by him. (Mariss Jansons)

You watch Bernstein and it infects you. You might not accept some things, but it still infects you, it makes you think “this is music about life and death”. (Andris Nelsons)
