On 3 December Willy Decker presents his production of Alban Berg’s Lulu at the Vienna State Opera, which includes the third act as completed by Friedrich Cerha. Ingo Metzmacher conducts with Agneta Eichenholz in the lead role.
Alban Berg left his opera Lulu unfinished. His untimely death on 24 Dec 1935 prevented him from completing the orchestration for Act 3, which he left as a short score. The posthumous premiere of the first two acts took place in Zurich on 2 June 1937.
After a long and thorough study of all the related material and similar consideration of the positive and negative aspects involved, Friedrich Cerha decided to make a playable version of Act III. He worked on it from 1962 to 1974 and, after Helene Berg died, he revised it again in 1976 –1977 and 1981 in light of newly accessible sources.
In 2014 the facsimile of the third act’s particell was awarded the prize “Best Edition” by the Association of German Music Publishers (Deutscher Musikverleger-Verband).
