With the Süddeutsche Zeitung calling it a “stroke of genius”, BR Klassik writing about a “revelation” and Deutschlandfunk remembering a “perfect evening at the opera”, Andrea Breth’s production of Jakob Lenz – conducted by Franck Ollu, with a terrific Georg Nigl in the title role – is both a critical and commercial success. Nigl was selected “singer of the year 2015” in Andrea Breth’s “performance of the year” by opernwelt’s annual survey.
With Jakob Lenz, Wolfgang Rihm produced the perhaps most successful music theatre work of recent decades. On 5 July Breth’s production premières at the Staatsoper im Schiller Theater. The drama of an anguished, self-destructive psyche, which confuses dream visions with reality, will also be performed on 8, 10, 12 and 14 July.
The composer about the work:
“I am moved by the story shaped by Georg Büchner of a young creative person who is ‘eaten up’ by his environment both externally and internally – but also by his own disposition as an erratic character that registers the spiritual and emotional climate around him like a barometer. This story moves me even today”. (Wolfgang Rihm)
