On Sunday, 22 September 2019, UE's New Critical Edition of Leoš Janáček's The Makropulos Affair will have its Swiss premiere at the Zurich Opera House. This production will be directed by Dmitri Tcherniakov, who has already presented exciting interpretations of Janáček’s Jenůfa and Debussy’s Pelléas et Mélisande in Zurich. Czech conductor Jakub Hrůša, a Janáček expert, will be débuting at Zurich Opera House.
In UE's New Critical Edition, the performance material has been completely reworked on the basis of all the preserved sources. The revision of the score involved a comparison of the autograph score with three copies that originated during the composer’s lifetime. It has already proven its mettle in cities such as Vienna, Berlin, Bonn, San Francisco and, Gothenburg.
Janáček’s eighth and, at the same time, penultimate opera belongs to the most frequently produced operas of the 20th century. It is based on the drama by Karel Čapek that Janáček saw in Brno in January 1923.
