This year’s Musikfest Berlin will be running from 2 until 22 September. 7 works by Wolfgang Rihm – among them one world and one national première – will be performed at the festival.
The WDR Sinfonieorchester Köln’s debut concert at the Musikfest Berlin will be of Wolfgang Rihm’s new work, Transitus, which was recently premièred by Riccardo Chailly at Milan’s La Scala, and its German première in Cologne will be immediately followed by a performance in Berlin at the Philharmonie.
Transitus forms a prelude to the world première of Wolfgang Rihm’s Trio Concerto with the Trio Jean Paul and the WDR Sinfonieorchester under the baton of its chief conductor Jukka-Pekka Saraste.
Leonidas Kavakos performs Lichtes Spiel together with the Concertgebouworkest Amsterdam under the baton of Mariss Jansons. The title of Lichtes Spiel may be taken as a pun on the German expression “leichtes Spiel”, meaning “an easy job“; or what we might call “Child’s Play”. Rihm has said that he intended it as “a transparent orchestral movement… something light, but not ‘lightweight’”. The result, which uses instrumental forces of Mozartian proportions, is a detailed, finely wrought score in which the composer provides fine-tuned indications of how practically every note is to be articulated.
The Mahler Chamber Orchestra and Daniel Harding present Rihm’s Quintet for Winds and the German première of his Horn Concerto. Peter Eötvös will begin his birthday concert with the Berlin Philharmonic with the orchestral work IN-SCHRIFT 2.
Keeping with the theme of the festival, UE composer Georg Friedrich Haas will as well be represented at the festival with the performance of his concerto grosso No. 1 for 4 alphorns and orchestra (hornroh; SWR Sinfonierochester, cond. François-Xavier Roth).
