Born in China in 1988, Wen Liu completed her study of composition with Christian Minkowitsch at Vienna Conservatoire Private University in 2010. She has been attending the Master Course in Composition under Wolfgang Liebhart since 2011 while simultaneously studying with Clemens Gadenstätter at Graz University of Music and Performing Arts since 2009.
The young composer had already won quite a number of prizes other than the 2012 Ö1 (Austrian Broadcasting Company Channel 1) Talent Fair Composition Prize, including First Prize in the 5th International Francisco Escudero Composition Competition and the 2012 Fidelio Competition. In 2010 she won the Sponsorship Prize of the Theodor Körner Fund in the Composition category and she won the Josef Trattner Composition Competition in 2009.
Liu was invited to the Crossings Contemporary Dance Festival in Johannesburg in 2010, the international forum Risk to Fall at Die Tonne Theater in Reutlingen, Germany, and the music theatre production Alice Schalek – Die letzten Tage der Menschheit in Graz ; she was composer in residence at the 2012 Atlantic Festival in the U.S.A. and she lectured on contemporary music and composition at Universitas Pelita Harapan in Jakarta (Indonesia) in 2010. She is invited to ManiFeste IRCAM, together with Ensemble Intercontemporain. She will write commissioned works for Zebra Trio (Ernst Kovacic) at the festival steirischer herbst 2013.
Her music has been played at the 2008 Wien Modern Festival, the 2009 Jeunesse Young Artists Podium event, the 2010 Shanghai Expo, the 2012 Stockholm Fringe Festival, Dimanche Rouge in Paris in 2012, the International Computer Music Conference in Ljubljana 2012, Vienna SaxFest 2013, the 2010 Hörfest in Graz, and the 2009 Grafenegg Music Festival with percussion soloist David Cossion, conducted by Tan Dun. She has had world premieres in major venues, including, in Vienna alone, the Konzerthaus, Künstlerhaus, the Musikverein, Porgy [&] Bess and the Odeon Theatre, plus The Forge Camden, London and the Minoritensaal in Tulln.
Her works have been recorded and broadcast by Austrian Radio ORF/Ö1 Zeit Ton, Austrian Broadcasting Art/Radio, Vienna Radio Orange, Radio Helsinki, Radio Today (South Africa), SABC2 Television Weekend Live Calendar of Events.
