Work introduction
To borrow the description of Mahler: the String Quartet No. 9 is a world of its own. Consequently, this music has infinite aspects, even if the basic tempo is quick and the sound is generally alien. A melody always shimmers through; precisely because it is played legato, it predominates over its surroundings. A dance-like element also keeps returning; but fundamentally this seems to be a mysterious world in which, strangely, much is implied but little is directly stated.
