Work introduction

Rihm takes his time in his piece; peace predominates, the music is transparent, airy. One could call it a fantasia or a meditation – yet the composer’s own view is different, expressed in a commentary from 1988: “Clearer signs or signals solved, dissolved or resolved, less concealed, the melodics perspectival – suddenly, amidst a ritual scene, unresolved, whether happily or threateningly. Theatre, bleak and frosty, yet darkly splendid – cold threads (seeds?), no conclusion, open-ended – by no means a finality.”
