This short, pensive piece seems to be conjuring up reminiscences of other works in the cycle. The music is slow and quiet, with long silences. Yet a sound is played sforzato again and again; a short repetition issues from the piano. Many of the pitches seem newly born from other, previous ones from another instrument, while others fade away during the piece, a coda or epilogue composed six years after the first Chiffre.
