Work introduction
Violent Incident is an installation by the American artist Bruce Nauman (*1941) created in 1986, for 12 video monitors controlled by 4 video recorders. Along with other works by Nauman, it was a significant source of inspiration for this composition. My work takes Nauman’s installation as a starting point for my own exploration, but does not try to imitate the original work. The gradual and eruptive, regressive and unreconstructed forms of violence with which we are all so familiar, the anxious moment before an act of violence and the spectral emptiness afterwards, all this is bundled together in the music as if it were a harmless little game. But at the same time it shakes at the foundations of the patterns underlying civilisation, which threaten us in life in a very different way. (Johannes Maria Staud)
