Work introduction

Although this piece was composed as a radio programme, it can also be performed as a stage work. Says Berio, “It is the musical setting of a ‘drama’ that has never been written. Initially, it was not intended for a concert hall, but for every conceivable medium that can reproduce words … Since it is based on sonic symbolism of vocal gesture and modulation (in the sense of metaphors of vocal expressive means), it imitates language only on the emotional level. […] Visage is the composer’s reverential bow to the radio, one of the most widespread media for diffusing pointless words.”
