Work introduction

Pianos and Voices I isn't precisely notated. The score is made up of individual parts and the pianists are instructed not to make any attempt at synchronisation. The idea is that the pianists determine the duration of the sounds by the amount of time the sounds take to decay.

All the sounds have to be very soft, with both the soft and the sostenuto pedals held down throughout. In addition, the pianists sometimes have to hum a given note – "for not less than three or more than five seconds" says Morton Feldman. But there's nothing indeterminate about the pitch of any of the notes, whether hummed or played: all these are notated precisely.
